Tryout Process
HSA Select is a competitive soccer program that serves young soccer players who are interested in receiving high-quality training, competitive league play within a structure that encourages multi-sport athletes and other activities outside of year-round soccer.
Registration
Register online to ensure a quick check-in process at tryouts. You'll need to create an account online if you do not already have one. There is a $10 registration fee.
- You can register online when you walk up (you'll need to register on your phone) but we prefer online registration in advance to help with planning.
- All registrations will be completed on birth year (example: player born on 5/21/2013 will register for “2013/U-12” tryout).
- If your player desires to try out at an older age group (play up), please review our Play Up Policy and contact us at [email protected]
- Note: for our youngest teams (U-11 / Birth Year 2014), we allow players with a 2015 Birth Year to register for the 2014 age group with no prior approval required.
Check in
Please arrive 15-20 minutes early to check in each day. Each player will receive a numbered pinnie on the first day, to wear during tryouts. Players must return the pinnie after each tryout session, and will be issued the same-numbered pinnie for the second day of tryouts. Tryout numbers are used by coaches when making player selections.
Attendance
Players are strongly encouraged to attend both days of tryouts. If you can attend only one session or arriving late, please let check-in staff know. No make-up tryouts will be held.
What to Wear
- Players must wear appropriate soccer footwear, shin guards and bring their own water bottle and ball.
- Players may not wear jewelry of any kind. This includes necklaces, rings, earrings, or bracelets of any kind (including rubber bracelets).
- Players may NOT wear current club clothing. Players doing so may be asked to remove such items during tryouts.
- Tryouts are held rain or shine.
Tryout Schedule
The HS Boys tryouts are held in February and tryouts for remaining teams are held in May. Scroll to top of page for schedule.
Team Coaches
The HS Boys Head Coaches will be announced in February and Head Coaches for all other teams announced in March/April. View current Head Coaching assignments.
Player Assessments
Your player will be assessed in the overall select player pool at tryouts. The coaches have organized a full slate of engaging, challenging activities for all the players that should provide sufficient information for our coaches. The activities will assess various factors the coaches look for in players that are a good fit for an advanced development program, not simply current aptitude. Assessments are performed on a variety of factors, including:
- Skill/Aptitude
- Speed of Play
- Decision-Making
- Athleticism
- Coach-ability
- Composure
- Focus
- Responsibility
- Attitude
- Creativity
- Work Rate
On the field, there will be HSA Select staff/volunteers comprised of head coaches and evaluators.
These sessions do allow these experienced coaches/evaluators to see what they need in a very efficient albeit short period of time. That said, tryouts are not exact by any stretch. Players help us and themselves to position themselves most favorably when they attend both sessions.
The Notification/Offer Process
Select team tryouts consist of two try-out sessions. Most of the activity is completed during the two-day tryouts although some players may also be identified after.
Player offers (by email) will be sent no later than 24-48 hours following the conclusion of the last tryout. Additional offers may be given depending on the response of first offers given.
Team Formation Meeting (updated 4/26)
The team formation meeting (for players accepting offers) will be held in May on:
Date: May 23
Time: 6:30PM
Location: Grace Church, 10323 28th Ave SW, Seattle
Player uniform fitting to follow meeting.
2023 Team Formation Slides (to be updated for 2024)

Following the meeting, head coaches will host a team meeting to review team schedule, fees, and volunteer needs, to select player numbers (new players), and to walk through the uniform fitting.
